The wind storm of December 2007 was a natural disaster of unprecedented proportions for the Pacific Northwest. But the irony and the tragedy of the killer storm is that the hurricane's devastating effects were entirely predictable -- and largely preventable. Furthermore, these hurricane force winds caused the largest evacuation and dollar loss in recent northwest history.
The problems associated with this mass evacuation and movement of people, and the overall devastation proves that state and local government, utility, communications, and transportation sectors were not prepared in their use of catastrophic disaster models, crisis management and business recovery plans.

December 1st, 2007 was more than a wakeup call to the Pacific Northwest. It began a new chapter of unpredictable and deadly weather systems. Typical in many disaster cycles, the first calls into Northwest Airboats were from the private sector. As the levees broke and the impact of this storm was being felt, Northwest Airboats activated crisis plans and procedures.
An added dynamic soon followed in the northwest, a total loss of communication systems causing total isolation of whole communities. This had an overwhelming impact on local law enforcement, fire, and rescue agencies. A complete breakdown of key infrastructure systems was underway. As the full fury of this storm was being felt, Northwest Airboats prepared to be deployed as necessary. Federal, state and local government agencies appeared over whelmed.

The major lesson state and local officials should draw from the tragedy is just how vulnerable the northwest is becoming to natural disaster disruptions from hurricanes, earthquakes and volcanic activity. Warns John McHenry, chief scientist at Baron Advanced Meteorological Systems, a forecasting firm in Raleigh, N.C. McHenry says "It would not take much to flood the entire Puget Sound metro region, effecting millions of people and causing billions of dollar loss.”
